“na tu māṁ śakyase draṣṭum
anenaiva sva-cakṣuṣā
divyaṁ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya
me yogam aiśvaram”
But you cannot see Me with your present eyes. Therefore, I give to you, divine eyes by which you can behold My mystic opulence.
Bhagavad Gita 11.8
The Lord is transcendental to our mundane senses. He cannot be seen with our present eyes. To the degree that we have entered the service of the Lord or to the proportion to which our lives are freed from sins, we can perceive the Lord.
But even though we are not free from sins, the Lord is kind enough to allow us the facility of seeing Him in His arca-murtis in the temple. The Lord is all-powerful, and therefore He is able to accept our service by presentation of His arca form. Such an arca-murti is not an idol but the Lord Himself, and to the proportion to which one is freed from sins, he is able to know the significance of the arca-murti.
The ideal use of the sense of sight is to see the beautiful arca-forms of the Lord.

“tasmin mahan-mukharitā madhubhic-caritra-
pīyūṣa-śeṣa-saritaḥ paritaḥ sravanti
tā ye pibanty avitṛṣo nṛpa gāḍha-karṇais
tān na spṛśanty aśana-tṛḍ-bhaya-śoka-mohāḥ”
My dear King, one should stay at a place where the great acaryas speak about the transcendental activities of the Lord, and one should give aural reception to the nectarean river flowing from the moon like faces of such great personalities. If someone eagerly continues to hear such transcendental sounds, then certainly he will become freed from all material hunger, thirst, fear and lamentation, as well as all illusions of material existence.
- Srimad Bhagavatam 4.29.40
Out of the nine types of devotion, the one that is mentioned first in the list and the easiest to perform is ‘Sravanam’ – listening. One just needs to listen to the holy name of the Lord, His glories and pastimes to get freed of sins. In the Vedas and Puranas, there are numerous examples of devotees getting liberated by simply listening. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu also recommended this process of hearing as a means of self-realization in the present age of Kali.
The ideal use of the sense of hearing is to listen to the name and glories of the Lord.

“yajña-śhiṣhṭāśhinaḥ santo muchyante sarva-kilbiṣhaiḥ
bhuñjate te tvaghaṁ pāpā ye pachantyātma-kāraṇāt”
The spiritually minded, who eat food that is first offered in sacrifice, are released from all kinds of sin. Others, who cook food for their own enjoyment, verily eat only sin.
- Bhagavad Gita 3.13
The great sage and author Vyasa says that among the senses, the tongue is the most voracious and wicked, and is very difficult to conquer. We all require food to survive and feel happy when we get to eat the food that we like – however, it is important to remember that all the food that we eat has been provided by the Lord. Hence, offering the food items that we cook, to the Lord, is an act of basic gratitude and loving reciprocation. Furthermore, the Lord says in Bhagavad Gita that eating the food that is first offered to Him (prasad) releases one from sin and purifies the mind, body and soul. Krishna also tells us about the food stuff that are favorable and those that are unfavorable and sinful (e.g. meat).
The ideal use of the tongue is to eat Krishna prasad and chant Krishna’s holy names.

"vividhāṅga sādhana-bhaktira bahuta vistāra
saṅkṣepe kahiye kichu sādhanāṅga-sāra”
“…dhūpa-mālya-gandha…”
I shall talk about the various practices of devotional service, which is expanded in so many ways. I wish to speak briefly of the essential practices... One should smell the incense, flower garlands and scents offered to the Deity...
- Caitanya Charitamrita, Madhya Lila 22.114
All our senses need to be engaged in the worship of the Lord - the sense of smell is no exception. When we smell the divine fragrances of the flowers, scents and incense sticks offered to the Lord, we get purified. In addition, our attraction to Krishna increases. This is one of the reasons behind the significance of visiting the temple regularly. The temple, the abode of the Lord is the place of pleasant, divine, transcendental fragrance.
The ideal use of the nose is to smell the flowers and scents offered to the Lord.
